In Search of the Person
The “True” and “False Self ” according to Donald Winnicott and St. Gregory Palamas
by Fr. Vasileilos Thermos
The hesychast saint emphatically emphasizes the need for the fullness of [man's] nature, since in fact, the ultimate can only be built upon a whole and full human nature in complete contrast to the temptation towards neo-platonism, herein expressed by Barlaam.
There is an attempt to substitute an intellectual religiosity for the open wounds of nature along the lines of an unbending moralism of imaginary narcissistic purity. Today and entirely false theology supports false selves and imparts to them painless remedies for sorrow instead of [teaching them] how to drastically change their mode of being.
I have no further need to emphasize just how important I consider this small book. It is important that this way of utilizing the psycho-analytical tradition be continued and deepened. I am quite certain that in this effort, Fr. Vasileios will personally play a special role.
